Villanueva de Algaidas is a thriving, full service, small town of about 4,000 people in Malaga province some 11 kilometres from Archidona, 30 from Antequera and 70 from Malaga, Malaga airport and the Costa del Sol. Roads in the area are excellent with quick connection to the motorway network so journey times are short. On the subject of transport, the high speed rail link to both the costa and Madrid and the rest of Spain is within easy reach at Humilladero.
The town’s main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal, the man behind Spain’s famous Goya Awards (the Spanish Oscars) statues. You can his home on Calle Granada whilst some of his work is displayed at the Asociación de Amigos de Berrocal (Friends of Berrocal Association) in the town.
Other things to see include:
The viewing ppoint known as Las Peñas which is just abouty 1 km from the village and provides super, panoramic views of the area. Nearby are the remains of a 9th Century Church and 16th Century Franciscan convent as well as the Arroyo del Bebedero Bridge. Also worth a visit and close to the town are the Alcaides necropolis and the El Pedroso and Sierra de Arcas caves.
The town itself has a couple of old churches worth visiting as well as a number of bars and restaurants. Shopping is sufficient for daily needs but the major centers at Antequera and Lucena are within easy reach. There are a number of small outlying hamlets and all have distinctive charm and character. Together with the rolling countryside of olive groves and corn fields they make the area a delight to explore.
Algaidas is the perfect home. Quiet. Comfortable, welcoming and close to everything.
