We don’t have many houses for sale around Montoro but I wish we had more! The town and location are simply stunning! This typical, full service, Andalusian pueblo blanco of about 9500 people is perched dramatically on a bluff above the Guadalquivir River, 45 km up stream from the City of Cordoba.
The town itself was declared to be a "Historic-Artistic Site” in 1969 whilst the area around it is famed for the production of excellent olive oil, game from the nearby sierras, honey and as a place to visit to enjoy the stunning scenery. Just north of the town is the Sierra de Cardeña-Montoro Natural Park.
The town has a long history going back to the pre Roman period and was fortified by the Moors. As a result there are plenty of sites to see including
The Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church (17th Century)
San Bartolome Church:
The Town Hall, formerly the Palace of the Dukes of Alba and Montoro.
Santa Maria de la Mota Church (13th Century): Now the town Museum.
The 15th Century bridge over the Guadalquivir
Plaza de Toros
Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia
Holy Week is a special time throughout Andalusia as every town and village has parades and processions by masked 'penitents' carrying holy statues through the streets. They are always special and spectacular but those of Montoro are so incredible that Holy Week in Montoro has been declared of National Tourist Interest.
