My first view of Iznajar some 15 years ago left a lasting impression. I came around a corner on the A333 road from Salinas to Rute and before me was the stunning site of a promontory jutting in the vast expanse of the Iznajar lake, surmounted by Moorish Castle and 19th Century Church and with the gleaming white of the town itself flowing down the hillside. Truly stunning and memorable and a view that is still there today.
The town itself was historically poor and it’s streets are much narrower and tighter than many of the neighbours like Rute. The construction of the dam on the Rio Genil near Cuevas de San Marcos however changed the fortunes of the town as it created a stunning 30km inland sea which is centered on and gets it’s name from Iznajar. Everywhere the views are beautiful with the gorgeous blue lake surrounded by rolling hills and olive groves.
We started to sell homes in the area shortly after that first visit. I won’t talk about the prices then because it would break your heart but the influx of foreigners to live and holiday in the area boosted the local economy no end and laid the foundation for the excellent relationship that exists in the villages and hamlets around the lake between incomers and locals.
Today the whole area is well served by roads with the motorway network within 20 minutes and Malaga airport under an hour away.
