Cuevas de San Marcos is a small friendly pueblo blanco located on the edge of the Subbetica National Park and a longish walk or very short drive to the Iznajar Lake (sometimes referred to by UK TV presenters for no discernable reason whatsoever as the 'Lake of Andalusia' as if there weren’t any others!).
So the setting is attractive, but is it isolated? Not at all. As the road system of Andalusia continues to improve access to the Costa, the airports at Malaga and Granada and the comprehensive local shopping centres of Antequera and Lucena becomes easier to reach. When the new Cordoba to Malaga airport is completed Malaga airport will be less than 45 minutes away!
Talking about how you can get to other places probably isn’t the best way to sing a village’s praises! Cuevas is however a full service pueblo with shops, daily produce market, bars, restaurants, hotels, banks and of course schools and discos (thoughtfully located on the outskirts). And talking of outskirts, if you come in on either road from the Antequera – Cordoba highway don’t let first impressions put you off! At first sight the village looks a bit of a dump but I reckon that's a clever plot to ensure the uninitiated drive straight past, leaving the attractive heart of the pueblo undisturbed!
The biggest asset of Cuevas de San Marcos however is the people. They are very welcoming and the large British community in the town gets on well with their neighbours. You are therefore assured of a warm and friendly welcome.
