Antequera is a prosperous, expanding town just 50 kilometers from Malaga Airport and the Costa. Decribed by the town hall as the "Logistical Centre" of Andalusia it is indeed well placed at the junction of main routes between all the great cities of Andalusia where motorways cross.
But the town's economic success shouldn't hide it's real attractions. It is one of Andalusia's real gems. Full of ancient buildings, charming family shops, cafes and bars it is a delight to wander around. The charm isn't fake: this is the real, working town so whilst tourists visit to enjoy ancient caves, dolmens, 24 churches and a Moorish fortress they are still an exotic species!
On the edge of the town there is a large shopping centre for those who want convenience rather than charm!
Local communications are completed with a railway connection (although for connection to the high speed train from Malaga to Madrid you need to go to near by Bobadilla) and the promise of an airport in the future near the new Antequera - Cordoba motorway.
Just outside the town and clearly signposted is El Torcal: The erosion of limestone rock has produced a quite sensational landscape of bizarrly shaped outcrops. There is a visitors centre and a number of paths have been laid out to provide walks around the site of between one and three hours duration. Not to be missed!
And the lovers? Los Enamoradas is a famous rock just outside the town on the road to Archidona and near the motorway to Malaga. It looks like the head of a reclining Indian, is visible for miles around and is, according to the legend, where an eloping Moorish girl and Christian lover, fleeing her vengeful father, chose suicide by jumping from the rock rather than be captured and separated. Knowing the legal practices of the time that was probably a wise decision!
