It’s hard to know where to begin when talking about Alhaurin El Grande, my home for some 14 years and the place where my kids grew up. So for me it will always be special, but the question is, why should it be special for you? The answer probably is that Alhaurin el Grande manages to feel like rural Spain whilst providing every kind of service and being situated 30 minutes from Marbella and Malaga Airport and 20 minutes from the Costa del Sol. In other words it has it all!
There are bars, cafes and restaurants a-plenty in the town, offering traditional tapas and raciones to gourmet international dining with every variety in between. Around the town in the countryside there are also plenty of ventas (cheap family restaurants) as well as the odd special like El Postillon with it’s very upmarket menu. For shopping the town itself has a range of local grocers and bakers to several supermarkets, whilst the weekly market is ever popular. Banks and the like abound and many have some staff who speak some English and all welcome foreign clients.
The scenery and views around the town are always spectacular! The town has a new indoor swimming pool, there are very different golf courses at Lauro Golf and Alhaurin Golf (the most spectacular in Andalusia?) and the whole area is popular for mountain biking, horse trekking, walking, birdwatching and even moto cross. Special events include the annual feria when the town never sleeps, Semana Santa which is truly spectacular, the Romeria and many, many more!
At the end of the day what makes Alhaurin so special to me is that the town and the countryside around it is alive and thriving. It’s no museum piece or old age community relying on foreigners to breathe life into it. People work, they tend their crops and trees, and they enjoy it!
