Alcala la Real, in Jaen province, is a pleasant, full-service, country town at the foot of a hill dominated by one of the most impressive Moorish forts in eastern Andalusia named the Fortaleza de la Mota which offers magnificent views of the surrounding olive groves.
The town’s origins date back to prehistoric times, however due to its strategic position on the border between Christian - and Muslim held lands, it became synonymous with fierce battles between the two adversaries.
Today Alcalá la Real is an agricultural and commercial centre. It is a town that is seeing many changes that can only benefit the town and its people. The larger supermarkets provide an excellent choice of products and the town boasts a bustling main shopping street with a variety of stylish shops. The main square is situated at the heart of a labyrinth of narrow streets with a number of shops and bars where you can enjoy coffee, drinks and a variety of food.
The area is surrounded by rolling hills covered with a patchwork quilt of olive groves.
